Paving the way toward a career in teaching is equal parts education and experience:

Educational Pathways

Educational, licensing, and teacher certification requirements vary by state; however, you must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to teach at a public school in all 50 states, regardless of the grade you’ve chosen to instruct.⁶ Typically, schools require teaching candidates to have a:

Bachelor’s degree – The major you choose as an undergraduate is irrelevant (although many aspiring teachers elect to major in education), but some states require specific coursework.
Teaching credential – A teaching credential (or) license will legally authorize you to teach in the state of your choosing. Depending on your career goals, you might elect to obtain a single-subject teaching credential, a multiple-subject teaching credential, and/or a credential in education specialist instruction—a teacher certification that will enable you to work with students with disabilities.

Additionally, you may take your own education a step further by pursuing a master’s in education—a graduate degree that will further your knowledge and, depending on your focus, enable you to work in a more specialized area (such as school counseling).

Gaining Practical Experience

In-classroom, hands-on experience as a teacher is vital to attaining the confidence you need to lead students successfully. In a student program, you’ll work under a mentor (or “cooperating teacher”) and garner insights on:⁷

Creating and presenting lesson plans
Leading activities
Time and classroom management

Further, you’ll be given invaluable feedback on your teaching methods and learn the art of communicating with both parents and students—skills that will undoubtedly prove indispensable when you take the helm of your own classroom.
